Answer
(i) Speed limits on a road are assessed in accordance with the Department’s guidelines which can be viewed through the following link:
https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/publications/setting-local-speed-limits-northern-ireland-rsppg-e051
The speed limit in urban areas, such as in the vicinity of Glencraig Primary School on Seahill Road, is generally 30 mph and I am advised this is considered appropriate for this location in particular given the enhanced measures already in place including school signs and road markings, red textured surfaces and zig zag markings at the school frontage.
(ii) I remain committed to promoting and improving road safety including working actively with partners to reduce death and serious injuries on our roads particularly near schools. My Department is currently completing works at 103 schools across Northern Ireland as part of the first tranche of my part-time 20mph speed limits at schools programme. These measures will increase driver awareness and achieve reductions in vehicle speeds outside and near these schools ensuring that parents, children and staff will be safer as they go to and from the schools on a daily basis.
It is my intention to roll out this programme further and other schools across all council areas, including Glencraig Primary School, will be considered for inclusion in a further tranche of part time 20mph speed limits at schools being taken forward this financial year.
