Answer
The current bathing season of 1st June to 15th September is determined by the Quality of Bathing Water Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2008. These regulations give effect to the EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) which seeks to preserve, protect and improve the quality of the environment and to protect human health in relation to waters that have been identified where bathing is traditionally practiced by large numbers of bathers.
However, the arrangements for Northern Ireland Bathing Waters are subject to regular review. A comprehensive review is due to be undertaken post EU exit, when the Department will consult with the public and statutory bodies as to the suitability of current arrangements, and undertake amendment where the evidence suggests it would be beneficial to the public.
